Description

First edition, first printing, inscribed by Lowry on the title page, "For Maggie, (Speaking of Givers-), with love Lois Lowry 1995." The recipient, Margaret Mary Kimmel, was a professor emerita at the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She edited the university's Golden Triangle Books imprint for young people and was a fierce advocate for children's literature. "From my vantage point as an educator, the need for people who are concerned about how children acquire knowledge, about reading, about books, about listening and life, about information in whatever form it takes – the need for us in the society – is more than it's ever been before. I think that we need to work with all of those other adults who are concerned. I see our contribution as being unique in that … but I see us as keepers of the story in the same way that storytellers are keepers of tradition" (Kimmel, quoted in the University of Pittsburgh obituary). Octavo. Original red cloth boards, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. Indent to top edge of first three pages from a paper clip. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with lightly faded spine panel and minor wear to head of spine. .
