Description

3 vols. Complete with 155 lithographs, 153 hand-colored; one (Hoary Marmot Pl. CIII) is tinted; and one (Esquimaux Dog, Pl. CXIII) is partially colored. Imperial 8vo, 19th c. three-quarter morocco; and marbled sides;gilt paneled spines decorated in a floral motif; t.e.g. Second octavo edition. Described as "fine" when it was sold at auction in 1914, this set was subsequently exposed to damp which has resulted in Vol. I in light mildew staining and a tidemark to the much of the lower margin of the text--the plates much less so (with a few exceptions). There is slight damp-staining, scattered mildew staining (marginal) and a little cockling to some leaves in Vol. II and III. The front cover of Vol. III detached (but present) and the leather at the two lower corners lacking. Some cracking to other joints and general scuffing to the leather and marbled sides. This was the Louis A. Biddle copy, with a record of its 1914 Philadelphia auction affixed to the rear pastedown of Vol. II. The purchaser's bookplate, dated in ms. 1914 , appears on each front pastedown.
