FIRST EDITION, author's illustrations throughout including many full-page, one map with printing in red, light spotting to early leaves, recurrent at final page of text, pp. [vi], 249, royal 8vo, original pictorial red cloth with illustration stamped in black and white, backstrip lettered and decorated in white, this the first issue (see below) but much less rubbed than usual, rubbed to extremities, spots to edges and endpapers, very good. The first issue of the binding used a 'Chinese white pigment' for the lettering on the backstrip that was immediately evanescent, and is often found to have disappeared entirely - this copy is of that first quantity but the majority of the lettering and decorations remain.
