FIRST CHILEAN EDITION, title-page printed in red, 2 tipped-in photographs at either end of text, numerous woodcut illustrations by Jos� Venturelli, the paper browned throughout, spotting to some pages, pp. [xiii], 447, royal 8vo, original wrappers printed in red and blue, browned overall with a few marks, some splitting at joint ends, a little chipped, nicked and creased, a couple of light marks to rear, good. Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'A Teresa d'Amico, sa viejo amigo, Pablo Neruda, 1953, Santiago'. The recipient was a Brasilian artist. A clandestine edition, published by the Communist Party of Chile (their leader in Chile, Galo Gonz�lez D�az, provides an Introduction) under a false imprint, whilst the author was in exile in Argentina. Presentation copies are uncommon.
