Roth's novel of ghetto life on the Lower East Side of New York was hailed as a modernist masterpiece upon publication and compared to the work of James Joyce. Despite critical acclaim it sold poorly and remained out of print until it was resurrected by the critics of the New York School in the 1960s. The second printing, which has contemporary reviews of the work inside the front flap, is nearly as rare as the first and is the only other printing that reproduces the splendid, Stuyvesant Van Veen-illustrated dust jacket. Publisher's grey blue cloth. Spine darkened, rubbed along the edges, a few pages with dog-ears or stains; bookplate, ownership marks; hinges shaken; dust jacket quite nice but with a few chips along edges v, [i], [1]-599 pp. 1 vols. 8vo First edition, second printing, published one month after the first, in second issue dustwrapper with blurbs from Edwin Seaver and Fred.
