The inlay is based on one of Shepard’s illustrations of Pepys dressed in a long coat, vest and collar, holding a candle and yawning, illustrative of Pepys’ famous line - “And so to bed.” The inlay is in eight colors and very well executed.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is one of the most important primary sources of the English Restoration, recording personal experiences and views of significant events such as the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London.
