London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1861. [English Literature] FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[10] 364 [16]. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and blind decoration to boards. All edges untrimmed. Armorial bookplate of Alfred Gilbey to front pastedown, neat ownership above. Textblock marginally toned, front hinge starting. Cloth rubbed to spine ends, and corners, a few small marks to boards, some wrinkling to the slightly darkened spine, bottom slightly compacted. A nice clean copy in the original binding. Very good. The classic tale of a misanthropic miser, warped by heartbreak and betrayal, whose character is redeemed by the chance adoption of an orphaned girl.
