First edition, first printing of Steinbeck's masterpiece, winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. New York: The Viking Press, 1939. Publisher's original beige cloth, lettered and decorated in brown, pictorial endpapers; pp. vi, 619. Dust jacket correctly priced at $2.75, although the edition statement to the front flap has been clipped. A very good copy in a good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding sturdy with a slight lean, minimal wear to boards, scattered foxing to text block edges. Offsetting and foxing to endpapers, else internally clean. Jacket shows general wear and rubbing with chipping at spine ends, a few faint stains, a bit of loss along the front flap fold and splitting along the front spine fold. Presents well in archival mylar.
