This is in the special 'author's binding' of original brown morocco cloth by Burn, bevelled boards, both boards & spine decorated in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. The boards have a central TH monogram. Inscribed by Thomas Hughes to the wife of his publisher: 'Author's presentation copy. Mrs Macmillan with the author's kindest regards'. Not in Sadleir; see Wolff 3330 for the first edition in the usual blue morocco cloth. The clerk, Richard, spends a summer cleaning the chalk outline of the White Horse carved into a hillside in Berkshire, and discovers a personal vision of an ideal England.
