FIRST EDITION. Half title, front., engr. title, vignette illus., 16pp cata., Christmas 1858. This is in the special 'author's binding' of original brown morocco cloth by Burn, bevelled boards, both boards & spine decorated in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. The boards have a central TH monogram. Inscribed by Thomas Hughes to the wife of his publisher: 'Author's presentation copy. Mrs Macmillan with the author's kindest regards'. Not in Sadleir; see Wolff 3330 for the first edition in the usual blue morocco cloth. The clerk, Richard, spends a summer cleaning the chalk outline of the White Horse carved into a hillside in Berkshire, and discovers a personal vision of an ideal England.
