Description

Four volume edition of Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. Bound in matching full calf with gilt armorial stamp of Trinity College Dublin of the front and back boards of all volumes. Gilt title boxes in two of the six compartments. Volumes I and II are comprised of the 6th printing of Newton's translation of Paradise Lost, a Poem in 12 Books (1763). Volumes III and IV are the 3rd printing of Newton's translation of Paradise Regained (1760). Each volume has a presentation book plate affixed to the front paste down identifying the volumes as gifted to Stewart Weldon upon completion of his examinations at Trinity College Dublin in 1767. Volume I begins with Newton's "Life of Milton", [i] ii-lxxxvi. Followed by Addison's "A Critique On The Paradise Lost," and the first six books of Paradise Lost. Volume complete and with seven plates by Francis Hayman and Johann Sebastian M�ller. Volume I condition notes: Pp v has a 1/8th piece missing from the lower right corner. Front hinge cracked just after the front free endpaper. Tear across the entirety in page 419. Small tear in center of page 185. Contemporary marginal notes to several pages. Dust staining to top edge of the book block. Volume II contains the remaining six books with six additional plates by Francis Hayman and Johann Sebastian M�ller. Volume II concludes with a 16-page postscript and comprehensive index. Volume II condition notes: Spine cracked at pages 302-303. Loss to the head of the spine and a scuff to the leather on the front board. Water staining to inside of pages 171-195. Pencil marginal notes on several pages. Dust staining to top edge of the book block. Volume III contains all four books of the 1760, 3rd edition of Paradise Regained as well as three plates. Milton portrait by George Vertue and two plates by Francis Hayman and Charles Grignion. Condition notes: Hinge cracked at the front end papers. Dust staining to top edge of the book block. Volume IV contains Milton's "Poems on Several Occasions." Pp. [i-viii], 1-386, [387-392, 393-396 blank]. Condition notes: Front hinge cracked at the end paper. Loss to half of page 281.
