Description

[352pp]: [iv], 348 (last two leaves blank); decorated orange-red cloth (yellow type in a green wreath flanked by yellow torches with green wreathed crowns) with gilt-stamped spine, lacking jacket; 197 x 127 x 33 mm. The little-known Canadian issue of the Arnold UK sheets (tp & conjugate inserted) in a unique Briggs designer binding (both the British & American editions having been dressed in comparatively drab type-stamped cloth). The bibliographer cites an initial British run of 2500 copies printed October 1910, followed by three printings in November (totalling 6500 copies) & another in December (1000 copies issued in 1911), with the possibility of two further printings in 1911 [Kirkpatrick A4a]. The unsigned cover incorporates elements from designs by Margaret Anderson, Decorative Designers, & Frank Hazen, without their sense of typography, leading to the presumption that it was a domestic confection. Bookseller's stamp at heel of ffe: "Wm Tyrrell & Co, Toronto" with hinges starting. Very slight wear to cloth at spine ends, tanned backstrip, though all gilt remains bright. A remarkably bright clean copy of a very rare Canadian edition.
