Nuremburg: Anton Koberger, 1493. Very Good. Single leaf in archival mat. Contemporary rubrication of capitals. Woodcut illustrations colored in, possibly at a later date. Paper remarkably bright and fresh. A leaf from the famous Nuremburg Chronicles of 1493, The headline on the front of the leaf reads "Sixth Age of the World," which apparently began with Pope Gregory, and embraced Thomas Aquinas (whose portrait appears on the back of the leaf). The illustrations also include a picture of flagellants whipping themselves, "a bizarre thing" (according to the Chronicle) practiced in Italy, Germany, and France.
