Description

First edition, signed limited issue, number 147 of 350 large paper copies, signed by both the author and illustrator. "The House at Pooh Corner is probably now the most loved and popular of all. It introduces Tigger and the game of Poohsticks..." (Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, p. 109). Published on 11 October 1928, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite, A. A. Milne: his Life, p. 336). The book was published in the UK in three issues: an extra limited issue of 20 copies bound in vellum, the present limited issue of 350 copies on large paper, and a regular trade issue. Quarto. Original blue cloth-backed white boards, front cover with printed paper label, edges untrimmed, gatherings unopened. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Light foxing to boards, minor bump to edge of front cover, browning to free endpapers; jacket soiled and toned with price printed on spine, top edge worn with several short tears: a very good copy in like jacket. John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. Milne", Studies in Bibliography, vol. 23, 1970, pp. 127-39, item IVB; Ann Thwaite, A. A. Milne. His Life, 1990; Ann Thwaite, The Brilliant Career of Winnie-the-Pooh, 1992.
