First US edition, first printing, signed by J. K. Rowling and by the illustrator, Mary GrandPré, on the title page. The American edition was also the first illustrated edition. Loosely inserted is a note of provenance from the owner of Books of Wonder, New York, stating that Rowling and GrandPré signed this copy during the promotional event he held for this title at his bookshop in 2000.
GrandPré is best known for illustrating the first American editions of the entire Harry Potters series.
Octavo. Original purple quarter cloth, spine lettered in green, dark green board sides stamped with blind lattice, orange endpapers. With dust jacket illustrated by Mary GrandPré.
Illustrated title page, headpiece vignette opening each chapter.
Crease to final two leaves; jacket bright and unclipped, surface scratch to rear panel: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
