Description

Sartre's L' �tre et le n�ant is one of the monumental works of twentieth-century philosophy. This book printed in 1947 is one of only 1040 copies, this copy numbered 297. In the original black paper boards with green decoration and gilt lettering. The copyright page states: "Il a ete tire en avril mil neuf cent quarante-sept mille quarante exemplaires sur alfa des Papeteries Navarre, dont neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix exemplaires numerotes de 1 a 990 et ciquante exemplaires hors commerce numerotes de 991 a 1.040. Ces exemplaires portent la mention: EXEMPLAIRE SUR ALF et sont relies d'apres la maquette de Colette Duhamel. Exemplaire Sur Alfa 297." Light wear to outer joint, small indentation on front cover, prior owner name stamp on front pastedown and flyleaf otherwise clean and very good. Sartre was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature but refused it.
