Description

First editions, first impressions, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy an association copy inscribed for Robyn Slovo, co-producer for the 2011 film adaptation: "For Robyn, with admiration & great expectations! David a.k.a. John le Carré, 6 xii '10". Directed by Tomas Alfredson and starring Gary Oldman as Smiley, the film proved a huge success and won BAFTAs for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film. Based in London, the South African producer Robyn Slovo has also worked on the biographical thriller Catch a Fire (2006) and the psychological thriller The Snowman (2017). Loosely inserted is a printed note from Slovo explaining that she received this presentation copy of Tinker following a pre-release screening Le Carré watched in December 2010. The public premiere took place in September 2011. Le Carré was involved in the film-making process and makes a cameo appearance in the Christmas party scene. Discussing the differences between this and previous adaptations, the writer said that "with Oldman you share the pain more. I think you share the danger of life, the danger of being who Smiley is. That is much more acute... Gary's is a much tougher George Smiley than we've seen before" (Lawrence). Three works, octavo. Original blue and black boards, spines lettered in gilt and bronze, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with bronze motifs on spine and front cover. With dust jackets (supplied for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). Tinker covers a little bowed, other volumes with foxing to edges and outer leaves; jackets unclipped, spines sunned, slightly rubbed and creased, with occasional nick: a very good set in like jackets. Will Lawrence, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Interview with John le Carré and Gary Oldman", The Telegraph, 29 July 2011.
