New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing, second issue with the shorter cloth binding of 7 3/16". This American edition (published January 5, 1886) preceded the London edition issued in wrappers by four days and the cloth issue by eleven days. The smaller binding issue was comprised of unsold copies initially trimmed for binding in wrappers that were then later cloth-bound. [viii], 138, [2 blank], [4 ads] pp. Bound in dark green cloth lettered in gilt. Near Fine with light wear at extremities; slight rippling to cloth, gentle bump to bottom rear corner. A very fresh, presentable copy of this supernatural Gothic tale of monstrosity and ambiguity.
