5 1/8 X 8 1/2 Inches. 392 PP. Stated "Third American Edition" on the title-page. The only book-length work by Jefferson to be published during his lifetime. Retains the scarce original 1794 Samuel Lewis map of the State of Virginia. Contents also include the "Madison's Cave" illustration on page 32, folding plate on Indian Tribes in Virgina on page 138 and the Ohio River map on page 387. This copy seems to lack the folding Natural Bridge plate, although we assume it was never issued in this version (the only copy we can find for sale and/or having sold with that particular illustration says that is is supplied in facsimile). Retains the original title-page, all other called for plates and fronts illustration of Jefferson by John Scoles. PO name to first flyleaf and title-page. Scattered foxing and toning. Several dog-eared corners throughout. Original period red leather spine label. Period morocco leather boards repair to the hinges at spine. Overall, an above average copy of this important work.
