Description

Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1855. First English Language Edition. Very Good. The first English language edition of Turgenev's first major publication, a collection of 25 short stories or sketches concerning rural life in Russia, and in particular, the relationship between landowners and their serfs. Bound in publisher's original brown cloth ruled in blind and decorated in gilt. Very Good. Light lean to binding, spine faded, cloth worn at corners and spine ends. Front and rear inner hinges show partial exposure, light staining, last sheet of adverts at rear is detatched along the bottom third.Published three years after the Russian edition, this was a milestone of Russian realism. Turgenev's depiction of cruelty of the ruling class is credited with having influenced public opinion in favor of the abolition of serfdom in 1861.
