Margaret Mitchell (1936) Gone with the Wind, US first edition, first printing, first state, published by MacMillan with May 1936 printed as called for. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Also, signed by the following actors starring in the famous 1939 film adaptation: Olivia de Havilland who played Melanie Hamilton; Fred Crane (Brent Tarleton); Evelyn Keyes (Sullivan O'Hara); Cammie King (Bonnie Blue Butler); Butterfly McQueen (Prissy); Frank Coghlan Jr. (soldier); Rand Brooks (Charles Hamilton); Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes); Ann Rutherford (Careen O'Hara); Patrick Curtis (Melanie's Baby); and Marcella Rabwin (executive assistant to David O. Selznick. Included is Olivia de Havilland's personal illustrated Programme for the 1961 Atlanta Centennial Costume Ball and Centennial Premiere of Gone with the Wind signed by actress and star of the 1939 film Vivien Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara), by producer David O. Selznick; and Governor of Georgia Ernest Vandiver, and actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Also, laid in is an original cheque signed by actor Clark Gable (Rhett Butler) who died shortly before the ball. Included is also an original typed letter signed by Margaret Mitchell referring to the film adaptation. Condition of the book: A beautiful near fine copy which is unread. The book is square with no lean, no foxing, no previous owner's scribbles, and no bookplates. The lettering on the front board and spine are vibrant and fresh. Gentle rubbing to the foot and head of spine only, otherwise fine. The book comes with the original, first state dust jacket with all issue points: USD 3 on the bottom of the front flap, and with the Gone with the Wind title printed on the second column of the back panel. The jacket has benefited from slight professional restoration to the crown of the spine. The book is housed in a beautiful handmade cream full leather tray case which protects the book for generations to come. The spine displays the title, author and US Signed First Edition at the bottom. Five raised bands on the spine and a nice velvet cushion inside. Inside the tray case there is a raised cushioned strip which prevents the book's page block to sag when gravity pulls the page block down a thoughtful feature usually not seen in standard cases. The letter: Dated January 9, 1940, from Margaret Mitchell Marsh to Mr. Sam Kendrick of the Associated Press, together with the original mailing envelope. On the author's personal letterhead. Letter notes giving photographs provided by Mr. Hendrick to Miss Mildred Hartsfield and also references planning for the Gone With the Wind premiere. "When, many months ago, Atlanta began planning for the Gone with the Wind premiere, we had no idea that it would turn out to be such a magnificent affair. We knew it would be lots of fun for the home town but we did not dream that it would excite so much interest all over the country and attract Atlanta so many prominent and celebrated people." Signed by hand by Margaret Mitchell Marsh. The cheque: Dated February 14, 1949. $1339.77 for Lee Meredith Insurance. Signed by actor Clark Gable. The cheque measures 3 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches. Prospective buyers of Clark Gable signed/inscribed photographs should note that those were mostly done in secretarial hand while cheques and legal documents had to be signed by Gable himself. The Centennial Booklet: A color illustrated program for the 1961 Atlanta Centennial Costume Ball and Centennial Premiere of Gone with the Wind signed to de Havilland on the cover by: Vivien Leigh, David O. Selznick, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and inscribed "To Olivia, Thank you for coming, Ernest Vandiver, Governor of Georgia"; additionally signed inside by de Havilland next to her picture. The program features photographs from Gone with the Wind as well as cast and crew information and a biography of Margaret Mitchell, Atlanta's favorite daughter. Gone with the Wind is a novel by American writer Margaret Mitchell, first published in 1936. The story is set in Clayton County and Atlanta, both in Georgia, during the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era. It depicts the struggles of young Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner, who must use every means at her disposal to come out of the poverty she finds herself in after Sherman's March to the Sea.
