First impression of the first edition of E. M. Forster's famous novel "Howards End", with no mention of any further impressions on the title page. ***Very good in the original red cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine and front board. The boards are generally clean and unmarked, with just some slight fraying and creasing at the top and tail of the spine. The cloth colours have faded to the spine but the gilt titles are still legible although oxidised over time - commensurate with exposure to sunlight and handling over the last 114 years. The corner tips are slightly rubbed and creased, but there is no significant damage to the fragile cloth covering. Page block edges clean, with none of the usual foxing. The binding is nice and square without any reading lean. Spine tight. Internally the book is also very good, with just neat previous ownership name and place in pencil on the front free endpaper - no other annotations. There is some offsetting to the endpapers, but hardly any internal foxing - just a few light spots. The paper covering of the endpapers is splitting at the gutter, but there is no cracking to the fragile binding. There is slight straining to the gutter between some gatherings, but again no cracking (please see scans). No creases or tears to the pages. No dustwrapper. ***343 pages plus two publishers catalogues - 4pp + 86pp - bound in at the back of the book. 197mm x 135mm. ***'Edward Morgan Forster OM CH (1 Jan 1879 - 7 Jun 1970) was an English author. He is best known for his novels, particularly "A Room with a View" (1908), "Howards End" (1910) and "A Passage to India" (1924). He also wrote numerous short stories, essays, speeches and broadcasts, as well as a limited number of biographies and some pageant plays. Many of his novels examine class differences and hypocrisy. His views as a humanist are at the heart of his work.' ***'"Howards End" is a novel by E. M. Forster, first published in 1910, about social conventions, codes of conduct and relationships in turn-of-the-century England. The novel is considered by many to be Forster's masterpiece. The book was conceived in June 1908 and worked on throughout the following year; it was completed in July 1910.' ***'Edward Arnold Publishers Ltd was a British publishing house with its head office in London. The firm had published books for over 100 years. Edward Augustus Arnold was born in Truro on 15 July 1857. His grandfather was Thomas Arnold and his uncle Matthew Arnold. He was educated at Eton and Hertford College, Oxford. From 1883 he worked as a magazine editor for the firm of Richard Bentley and from 1887 edited Murray's Magazine for the John Murray publishing house. He set up his own publishing business in London's Covent Garden in January 1890. Trading under his own name and later as Edward Arnold & Co., he specialized in educational books, exploration, mountaineering, Egyptology, and medical and scientific texts. He also published most of E. M. Forster's major works.' (Wiki) ***A scarce true first edition of this important novel, published in 1910, in the original cloth binding, in complete and presentable condition. The production of the book is quite basic, and the structure of the binding is quite fragile. Very few copies will have survived intact. Of interest to collectors of the work of E. M. Forster and 20th century first edition titles. A book that is rarely seen in its first edition format now. *** For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
