To his great dismay it sold so poorly, he was forced to give copies away. Today, he is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. His writing in the realist tradition presents early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism, to end unceremoniously in an early death at the age twenty nine. This English edition carries the sterling reviews of his successful "The Red Badge of Courage," as a frontispiece.
