12 vols. Engraved frontispiece portrait; three folding maps. 8vo, old full calf; gilt paneled and decorated spines; red and green gilt-lettered spine labels; and the gilt initials of the distinguished original owner at the base of the spines. The fifth octavo edition. This set was partially exposed to water at the rear of the bookcase in which they were housed since publication. Eleven of the volumes exhibit faint dampstaining predominately at the fore-edge. One of the 24 gilt-lettered spine labels is absent, and beneath that is a coin-sized chip to the spine. There is a small chip and the beginning of a split to the front joint of Vol. V. Vol. IV sustained more damage: the paper swelled and split three quarters of the rear joint. The paper has returned to its original shape but a gap of 1-8 to 1-4" remains at the rear joint. Even this volume remains tight and sound. Norton 39.
