Volume I (first edition), Volume II (second edition) and Volume III (first edition) of Victor Hugo's Toilers of the Sea, in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume. Toilers of the Sea (Les Travailleurs de la mer) is dedicated to the island of Guernsey, where Victor Hugo spent 15 years in exile. Les Travailleurs de la Mer is set just after the Napoleonic Wars and deals with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the island. It is the story of a man who attempts to win the approval of his beloved's father by rescuing his ship, intentionally marooned by its captain who hopes to escape with a treasure of money it is transporting. 16 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume III. In publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally smart, though there is some bumping to the spine, boards and extremities of all three volumes. The hinges to Volume I are starting but reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean except for the occasional handling mark and a little spotting to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good.
