Price-clipped second state dust jacket with the 383 Madison Avenue address for the publisher. Otherwise, all first edition points: Reynal and Hitchcock on the bottom of the front flap and on both the title page and copyright page; only 3 previous titles on the copyright page; 5-line colophon at rear (page 94); 6th printing in italics at bottom of copyright page (the 6th printing was the final printing of the first American edition). Previous owner s 1950 gift inscription on the FFE, along with a label from Boston s venerable Old Corner Book Store home to Ticknor and Fields and E.P. Dutton and meeting place for Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Charles Dickens. Slight lean to spine. Minor rippling to textblock. Light bumping to extremities, especially at spine ends. Light chipping and rubbing to toned and price-clipped dj; some soiling to rear cover. A very presentable copy with a remarkably complete dust jacket.
