Description

New York: E. Bliss & E. White, 1825. Stated "First American edition." (Issued the same year as an edition published in Cincinnati by Luman Watson, which may precede it, priority unknown.) vi, [13]-178 pp. Bound in later plain boards with typed spine label. A homely copy with chipping to head, splitting along spine edges, wear to paste downs. Contents Very Good, legible with occasional foxing, former owner's name on front free endpaper, two dog-eared pages, small hole in rear endpaper. An uncommon work of utopian, pre-Marxist socialism, written by the Welsh founder of the model industrial New Lanark community. In 1824 Owen arrived in New York already a celebrity in the communitarian movement. The following January he purchased a pre-existing town in Indiana and began to promote it as a utopian model community, New Harmony; this work helped spread his ideas quickly. Carter and Muir in Printing and the Mind of Man called this "the first practical statement of socialist doctrine"…
