Description

New York: Berry, Rogers, and Berry, 1742 (1791). Paperback. Fair. Signed. First New York edition with incorrect date, 1742 for 1791, 76 pp, with the ownership signature of Montford Stokes (1762-1842) to front cover; manuscript fragment initialled by Stokes laid in at page 35. Unbound signatures as issued in overall fair condition with darkening and soiling, especially to cover title. Stokes was a United States Senator and the 25th Governor of North Carolina (1830-1832). In 1832 President Andrew Jackson named Stokes to head the Federal Indian Commission, a post he held until his death in 1842. Stokes was buried at the Fort Gibson Cemetary in Oklahoma. A particularly scarce item with interesting association.
