First volume consists of half-title, title, the author's preface (printed in single column), a History of the English language followed by a Grammar of English (both printed in two columns), followed by the Dictionary (text in three columns); second volume contains a half-title, title, and the rest of the great dictionary. Recently rebound in half light brown speckled calf with 5 raised bands / marbled boards lettered in gilt on red and black spine labels. Prelims slight foxed o/w with clean text. Decent very good indeed attractive copies.

Samuel Johnson's 'A Dictionary of the English Language' is among the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language. First published on 15 April 1755, the dictionary offered comprehensive definitions and illustrative examples of usage.
