Shelved Room C. Bruce Chatwin was born May 13, 1940 in Yorkshire, England amidst the Blitz. While living with his maternal grandparents during World War II, Chatwin would find a piece of a giant sloth from Patagonia, planting a seed of travel in him. It would be during Chatwin's time at "The Sunday Times Magazine" that Chatwin would interview the architect Eileen Gray, solidifying a desire to make Patagonia his grandest adventure. Chatwin would spend 6 months in Patagonia in 1974 traveling, gathering the stories of those who lived or settled there, photographing much of the adventure. "In Patagonia" would be completed in 1977 and solidified Chatwin as a renowned travel author, earning the Hawthornden Prize and E. M. Forster Award. 1388007. Special Collections.
