Bound c.1990 by Bayntun-Riviere in half brown polished calf, brown cloth sides, the spines divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label and in the third on a green goatskin label, the others with gilt corners and centres, marbled endleaves, top edges gilt.

Published in 1859, 'Adam Bede' is the first novel by George Eliot. It was an immediate success and praised for its realistic and rustic depiction of 19th-century rural life.
