FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, a couple of tiny spots at head of prelims, pp. [iv], 493, crown 8vo, original red cloth, blind-stamped roundel design to upper board with publisher device in same to lower, the backstrip with lettering and ornate border design in gilt, the boards bowing slightly, backstrip faded, a couple of tiny spots of wear and a small puncture at head of upper board, edges toned with a few spots to endpapers, ownership inscription to flyleaf, good. Garnett's was not the first translation into English of this work - it was preceded by that of Frederick Whishaw in 1885 - but it was the dominant one for the greater part of the twentieth-century; it is scarce in the first edition.
