Description

First edition, first impression, first issue, bound in black boards and with the wide-flapped dust jacket priced 16s. Among the most significant and startling works of post-war British literature, the novel was the basis for the equally controversial 1971 Stanley Kubrick film, which led the author and director to fear that they had "opened a Pandora's box" (ODNB). In the second issue, the jacket flaps were trimmed and re-priced 18s. The third issue was published in purple boards with a decimal price sticker. Boytinck 75. Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device on rear cover in blind. With dust jacket by Barry Trengrove. School library stamp sometime partially erased from p. 21 and p. 83. Unclipped jacket generally bright, foxing to flaps and verso, small paper restoration to head of front flap fold only, minor rubbing and creases: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
