First American edition, first issue. An exceptional copy of the first American appearance of one of Hawthorne's most ambitious works. Brown buckram with gilt stamping on spine. Two volumes. All points present: correct signing with pg. ix of vol. 1 signed "1*," preface placed before table of contents, ads at rear dated February 1860; volume II has no conclusion, signed "4*" at pg. 197. Most likely issued simultaneously with the British edition. Fine. Gilt lettering on spine is lightly tarnished, faint spotting at the edges. Former owner's name on preliminary blanks; overall bright and clean. Housed in a custom slipcase.
