London: Jonathan Cape, 1986. Softcover. VG+. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 324 pages. Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket. The UK proof copy of Atwood's well known futuristic dystopian novel, the basis for the TV series that debut in 2017. A tale of powerless women in a patriarchal society. The novel won the Governor General's Award in 1985 and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. It was also nominated for the 1986 Nebula and Booker Prize and the 1987 Prometheus Award. This copy with an early trial jacket (a modernist woman in red clutching a handbag), which was changed entirely for the eventual publication, reportedly due to objections from the author (David Rees 6/97 - Quill and Brush Author Guides). About a VG+ proof in red wrappers with the trial jacket about VG showing lots of edgewear and minor chipping, now with brodart for protection.
