First edition, first impression, in a fine vellum binding pictorially blocked in gilt after the original cover design. This classic collection of 12 stories and 12 poems was the author's only work illustrated by himself. "The stories, told with Kipling's oratorical diction and whimsical humour, clearly increase in complexity as the book progresses" (Grolier).
Octavo (229 x 170 mm). Mid-20th-century vellum by the Cottage Bindery of Bath, spine lettered in gilt, low raised bands dividing gilt-tooled compartments, gilt frame on covers, enclosing gilt vignette after the original cover design, edges gilt, white silk ties.
With 22 full-page illustrations, further line drawings in the text, all by Kipling.
Occasional light foxing, closed tear to head of pp. 109/10, small paper flaw to colophon. A very attractive copy.
