First edition, second issue - often called the "cheap paper issue." One of a mere 200 copies. The first printing of Lady Chatterley's Lover occurred between April and June 1928 in a run of 1000 numbered and signed copies. As the year progressed, police raids and customs interceptions became more frequent and successful. Probably towards the end of November, with the first printing nearly sold out and Lawrence keen to undercut the increasing numbers of piracies, he brought out this small publication of 200 copies on common paper printed from the type used earlier that year. It was all but sold out by the end of December. (Roberts A42b)Original mulberry wrappers, uncut, small closed tear at upper spine else a Fine, bright copy. Housed in a slipcase. About Lady Chatterley's Lover

Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published privately in 1928 in Italy and in 1929 in France. It portrays a young married woman, Constance Reid (Lady Chatterley), whose upper-class barrister husband has been paralyzed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. The class difference between the couple highlights a major motif of the novel which is the unfair dominance of intellectuals over the working class. The book is a meditation on the necessity for a balance between the body and the mind and the destructive effects that industrialization and modernization can have on both.
