Description

The first edition of M.R. James' collection of spooky stories marked the beginning of the modern era of supernatural fiction and as such is one of the most sought after tales of the macabre of ghostly for collectors. This example has all of the requisite (and terrifying) illustrations by James McBride with each in cracking condition. A lovely example of a scarce title. First edition, first printing. The first printing is found with and without an inserted 16-page publisher's catalogue of books - there is no priority over which came first and both are considered the first printing. A very good example. The binding is strong and firm and in better condition than many copies on the market. To the spine and the back there are some blemishes and what looks to be like previous water damage. However, nothing major and as said, it's one of the better bindings out there. Internally to the ffep, we have a small book dealer's sticker alongside a small previous ownership sticker. Minor foxing throughout the book block as is common but mostly it is internally a fresh and very good example. Published Edward Arnold, London, 1904.
