First edition, first impression, of Waugh's second novel, a satire of London's rich young socialites. The working title, Bright Young Things, was abandoned as Waugh felt the phrase was too clichéd.
It sold well on publication, reaching seven printings in as many weeks, and established Waugh as the pre-eminent novelist of his generation.
Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in crimson morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, dark green endpapers, gilt edges.
Black and red decorative title page.
A fine copy.
