448 pages plus index (complete). First American edition. A comfortable copy. The title page has a previous owner signature: R Coke Jr - most likely the Jacksonian Virginia congressman and plantation owner. The American edition of Ricardo's well received book was limited to 500 copies of which 250 were subscribed by members of Congress. Most of the rest were unsold and re-used at a later date. Ricardo was not only an economic philosopher and theorist, friend of Mill, Bentham and Malthus, he was a very successful speculator and businessman and MP. Indeed his home, Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire, is now the home the Princess Royal. This edition was printed in the United States after its wholehearted positive reception by the Edinburgh Review. This is a hardy, still gratifying copy. The book is housed in a smart box. This has marbled faces, leather spine. The spine has gilt borders and titling (on a different patch of leather). The spine is fresh and elegant. Marbled boards. The spine has been recently, and most carefully repaired. The boards are much worn, scuffed, marked about all edges, corners and faces. They are still steady and resolute. The pages are rough cut. NB: pp 129-144 have been misbound between pp 120 and 121. All pages are complete. Whilst the pages have evidence of age and use throughout the contents are pleasing. There are areas of tanning, some sprinkling of foxing here and there. Nonetheless, they are clean, clear, healthy, comfortable, certain, alert, sagacious and venerable, confident, the ink still bold. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
