This a lovely, well engraved and detailed 'bird's eye' view of the north western French port of La Rochelle. This engraving showing the towns excellent fortifications and a a busy harbour. It is by the accomplished Swiss engraver and publisher, Matthaus Merian. He became extremely well known for his engravings of plans and of town views in the seventeenth century. This particular engraving comes from Gottfried's 'Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica'. (ref: Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers 'K-P' page 240).
