Edition of approximately 7,000. Escher's initials, the company and date printed to one side. This 20-sided box was commissioned by the tin factory Verblifa for their 75th jubilee and originally contained chocolate pastilles made by either Droste or Verkade. The box was gifted to employees, clients, and business associates.
Escher's work explores the concept of impossible geometry used frequently in fantastical and science fiction literature, from notable early examples such as E. A. Abbott's Flatland (1884) to later works such as those by Jorge Luis Borges in which the "construction of the fourth dimension in their literary creation can find analogy in the magic mirrors of M. C. Escher" (Zeng). Escher's works have likewise provided a visual language for many subsequent illustrations of the weird, including the works of H. P. Lovecraft.
Offset lithograph on tin. Diameter 17 cm. With printed card insert to lid and blank card to base.
Light rubbing to edges otherwise a nice example of this fragile object.
