This a lovely, well engraved and delicate view of the southern French port of Marseille by the accomplished Swiss engraver and publisher, Matthaus Merian. He became extremely well known for his engravings of plans and of town views in the seventeenth century. This particular engraving comes from Gottfried's 'Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica'. (ref: Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers 'K-P' page 240). Size:325 x 370 mm. Good condition. minor discolouration to centrefold.
