One of a series of photos taken by William Amos Haines (1877-1953), who travelled through the United States in the first decades of the 20th century making early panoramas with a rotating Kodak Cirkut camera. He was particularly interested in California's Spanish missions, and took photographs of a number of these sites around 1910. Mission San Juan Bautista was founded in 1797 by Father Fermín Lasuén. It is the largest of the California missions and was featured prominantly in the film Vertigo, with Hitchcock adding a bell tower by using scale models and trick photography. Photograph. Sheet size: 20.2 x 49.5 cm. 2 ink stamps of the Santa Barbara Free Public Library and red pen mark to verso. A few minor pinholes and creases and short closed tears from handling, vertical crease from folding on the far left side of the photo, adhesive residue to verso. Very good condition. Presented in hand finished stained oak frame with UV glass.
