Insulae divi Martini et Uliarius, vulgo L'Isle de Re et Oleron

Willem Janszoon Blaeu
USD$1,002

Description

A very fine and most attractive mid seventeenth century map of the delightful L'Isle de Ré and the L'Isle de Oleron in the Pictou-Charentes region of north west France. North is orientated to the left. This Blaeu map is typically detailed and precise and complemented by a number of subtle, decorative embellishments; compass roses, galleons, a divider and a mileage scale, a sea monster, and a discreet title cartouche. Throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the island alternated between belonging to the English or French crowns. In 1987, a 3 km bridge was constructed between the island and the mainland, making the island an attractive tourist and holiday destination. Size: 480 x 580 mm. Copperplate engraving with early wash colour. Dutch text on verso. Very good condition.
