One of a series of portraits of famous musicians issued by the Imperial Tobacco Company, founded by the Bristol tobacco manufacturers W. D. and H. O. Wills. Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras. In his youth, he received a thorough musical education from his father. He wrote his first composition at the age of six, and continued to write music almost until his death. He is best known for his operas and was also a prominent conductor throughout Germany and Austria. Stauss' early works were influenced by Wagner
