Clear and accurate map of early nineteenth century France, coloured by department, Three scales at lower left, below the title. John Cary was considered 'the most representative, able and prolific of English cartographers'. Tooley says, 'As an engraver he was elegant and exact with fine clear lettering and great delicacy of touch'. When the Ordnance Survey began accurately mapping the UK, they used John Cary's style as the basis for their work.From the New Universal Atlas. Copper engraving. Original colour.
