Nero's Golden Palace

John Blundell
USD$199

Description

A speculative view of Nero's vast palace in Rome, built after the fire of AD65. The lavishness of the palace was legendary, and was partly responsible for Nero's unpopularity. When the palace was pulled down, the lake at its centre became the site of the Colosseum. The palace was buried until the Middle Ages, when artists such as Raphael and Michaelangelo has themselves lowered into it by rope to admire the 30,000 metres of frescoes. Parts of the palace, around the Domus Aureus have been excavated and were reopened to the public in 1999. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Slightly darkened at centrefold, the print has been folded. A clean crisp impression. Very good condition. Size: 39.5 x 27 cm.
