Sheet 23 of Edward Stanford's magnificent and meticulous 24 sheet map of London. According to Hyde, this was the first 'thorough-going survey of the Metropolis since Greenwood's in 1824-26.' It includes a vast amount of detail; every house is marked, heights, omnibus routes, adminstrative boundaries - county court districts, poor law districts. The map was first published in 1862, and such was its popularity that it ran to over twenty editions, the last being in 1901. The map was published uncoloured and coloured according to the buyers' needs.
