This handsome road map is from John Ogilvy's Britannia, which was the first survey of the roads of England and Wales. It was also the first graphic delineation of roads which established the practice of representing the road on the continuous unfolding strip. It shows the journey from Hereford to Leicester. The route is shown in seven strips, mile by mile, showing every town, village, wood and milestone along the way. Each strip has a compass rose showing north. Large decorated title cartouche at top centre with royal arms below.
Copper engraving. Hand coloured.
Very good condition; light offsetting; wide margins.
