Description

Map of the Billingsgate and Bridge Wards in the City of London. From the northern end of London Bridge the map extends across (Lower) Thames Street and Eastcheap into Gracechurch Street and includes the Monument, Billingsgate Market and Fishmongers' Hall, the churches of St. Magnus the Martyr, St. Margaret Pattens, St. Mary at Hill and St. George, as well as Love Lane, Botolph Lane, Pudding Lane and Fish Street Hill. The map is decorated with a rococo cartouche, a compass rose, the arms of the contemporary aldermen (William Beckford and William Stephenson) and elevations of St. Mary and St. George (incorrectly captioned St. Botolph). From the middle of 1760s, London Magazine started to publish a series of maps of Wards and Parishes of the City of London. The same plates were used later in the Noorthouck's History of London (1722) with no modification except for the upper margin. s Copper engraving. Hand coloured. 24.5 x 19cm
